Antonín Leopold Dvořák a világ talán legismertebb cseh zeneszerzője. Rengeteg műfajban alkotott, szinte nincs olyan zenei műfaj, melyben ne probálta volna ki magát.
Befutott zeneszerzőként Amerikába is eljutott, és bár mindössze három évet töltött ott, késői művein erősen érződnek az amerikai hatások. Mint a következő művén is.

Borodin: Serenata alla spagnola

HU
Kedves Olvasó!

A mai napra Alexander Porfiryevich Borodinról írok pár gondolatot.

Borodin igencsak különleges zeneszerző, gyerekkorában nemcsak a zene, de a természettudományok is érdekelték. Sőt tulajdonképpen több tanulmányt folytatott természettudományos területen, mint zenében (legalábbis hivatalosan).
Tanult a szentpétervári Orvosi-Sebészeti Akadémián, ahol kitünetéssel végzet, majd két év múlva, már kémiából doktorált. Ezen a tudományterületen érte el legnagyobb tudományos sikereit. A diplomája után tanársegédi kinevezést kapott, majd 1860-ban részt vett a világ első kémiai témájú konferenciáján, Kahlsruheban, ahol Oroszországot rajta kívül, az akkor még fiatal Mengyelejev (a periódusos rendszer későbbi megalkotója) képviselte ezen a konferencián. 1864-ben professzori kinevezést kapott (szintén kémiából). Sőt Oroszországban mind a mai napig tanítják az ún. Borodin-egyenletet.
Kiemelkedő tudományos munkája mellett zenei munkássága is kiemelkedő.

Dear Reader,

Today, I write about Alexander Porfiryevich Borodin.

Borodin was a very special composer, in his childhood, he interested in not only music, but natural science too. Moreover, he studied more natural science then music (at least formally).
He studied in the Medical–Surgical Academy in St Petersburg, and he took an honours degree, 2 years later, he doctored in chemistry. He reached the greatest scientific achievements in this field. After his graduation, he got a job as an Assistant Professor. In 1860, he participated the first conference of chemistry in Kahlsruhe, the other Russian chemist, who take part this conference was the young Mendeleev (he created the periodic table of the elements).
In 1864, he got a appointment as a professor (in the field of chemistry). Moreover, in Russia, the Borodin reaction is a taught chemical equation.
Besides his emergent scientific work, he was a great composer too. He was one of the unavoidable Russian composers of the XIX. century, and member of The Five. He liaised not only Russian, but European composers too, he was a pen pal of Liszt, who acknowledged and support his composer's work.

A vonosnégyes (Ravel: F-dúr vonósnégyes)

HU
Kedves Olvasó!

A vonósnégyes a kamarazenei együttesek talán legelterjedtebb formája.

A dal szövege Matthias Claudius, a két művel megegyező című, verse, melynek egy magyar fordítása a következő (fordította: Szalki Bernáth Attila):

A halál és a lányka

A lányka:

Csak tűnj el! óh, csak tűnj el!
Csak menj el, bősz halál!
Ifjú vagyok még, menj el,
Ne érj hozzám, ne bánts!

A halál:

A két kezed nyújtsd csak szép tünemény!
Nem bántlak, tars te jó barátnak.
Ne félj! Hisz vad nem vagyok én,
Aludj el karjaimban lágyan!

Érdekes, hogy mind a versben, mind a dalban a lányka szövege és dallama a zaklatottabb, a zongoraszólam is erősen figurált, Schubert ebben a versszakban a zongora középső és magasabb regisztereit használja, a haláltól való féleme jelenik meg benne, mind a lírában, mind a zenében.
Ezzel szemben a halál versszaka mind zenében, mind lírában a nyugalmat, a békességet sugározza.

Dear Reader,

I write Franz Schubert’s Death and the Maiden, which one of his most famous work. I deal whit both the song and the string quartet.

Franz Schubert was undeniably the greatest master of romantic song, but he composed instrumental music too.

The lyrics of the song was written by Matthias Claudius. The poem, the song and the string quartet title is identical.

Death and the Maiden

The Maiden:

"Oh! leave me! Prithee, leave me! thou grisly man of bone!
For life is sweet, is pleasant.
Go! leave me now alone!
Go! leave me now alone!"

Death:

"Give me thy hand, oh! maiden fair to see,
For I'm a friend, hath ne'er distress'd thee.
Take courage now, and very soon
Within mine arms shalt softly rest thee!"

Both on the poem and both on the song, the maiden lyrics and melody are distracted, it is so interesting, and the piano accompaniment has a tight figuration. In this verse, Schubert used the middle and high register of the piano.
The fear of the Death expressed in this verse, both the poem and both the music.

In contrast, the verse of the Death is calm in music and calm in lyrics. The calmness increased by the minor chords, which can be heard the whole piece, but in this verse Schubert use the lower register of the piano.

A curiosity, you can construe the poem (and the song) as a “love story”, in which the girl refuse the man (the Death), but the men continue the courtship, and try get the love of the girl…

The melody of the sing is recognizable in the second movement of the string quartet, from this fact is unequivocal that, the song and the string quartet have a same feeling and idea.

The question of the key is also interesting. This two pieces are in d minor, which key is an often used by the composers to create the mood of fate.
Finally, let listen to the song and the string quartet.

A dal ...
The song ...
